In collaboration with the Gulf of California Marine Program, UCMEXUS, UC Riverside, & CONAPESCA (Mexico’s national fishing agency), TASON has developed an android application to help record commercial fisheries landings in real-time throughout Mexico. The project solves the common fisheries problem of poor catch reporting & catch statistics. In addition to the simple catch recorder, the collaborators have asked TASON to help them link the application to GPS trackers that are used by collaborating fishing cooperatives along the Pacific coast of Mexico. The long-term vision of the project is to link live catch data with live fishing boat tracks. This helps collaborating marine scientists to monitor catches in real-time to help evaluate current catch quota systems. It also better informs fishers of the most cost-effective way to fish with the long-term goal of increasing efficiency whilst reducing over-fishing practices.
